Media Release – Call For Pro-active Northern Businesses to Come Forward

Northern Tasmanian Development Corporation (NTDC) has been charged by its seven Council Members with creating conditions that will allow the region to achieve significant growth targets over the next decade. NTDC and its Council Members acknowledge that economic growth underpins regional prosperity, assists in driving quality job opportunities, and makes the region a more attractive place to live.

Under the City Deal, NTDC has been given the role of developing a Regional Economic Development Plan (REDP) by the end of 2018 to ensure the whole region benefits from the City Deal agreement.

The National Institute for Economic and Industry Research (NIEIR) have been commissioned to model what the future may look like taking into account the new projects already underway in the North.

Maree Tetlow, CEO at NTDC advised that the preliminary data indicates that Northern Tasmania Region needs to “build on the currently improving economy and investment environment; and develop a specific population strategy to balance our quickly aging population to achieve economic sustainability”.

“We also need to leverage the UTAS Transformation Project beyond the construction phase, to ensure it delivers long term productivity and associated innovation and educational attainment improvements in our community. The lessons highlighted in the report indicate that we need to attract more students to our region, and then encourage them to stay with attractive well paid jobs once they are qualified. In that way they will improve our aging demographic.”

“Finally, we want to support Industry to invest capital to either start-up business in the region or invest in business expansion, with the ultimate result being to increase our exports to other parts of Australia and overseas.”

“NTDC is keen to talk to any business in our region who has suggestions on what opportunities we could support and also what barriers need to be dealt with to allow more businesses to export out of the region to domestic markets on the mainland and international markets.”

Ms Tetlow said “we have interviewed 60 businesses to date and would like to meet with another 40 pro-active businesses that have plans for expansion.”
