BELL BAY POWERFUELS

The $1.7B Bell Bay Powerfuels Project currently under development by its Australian parent company ABEL Energy involves a green hydrogen and green methanol production facility, to be built at Bell Bay, Tasmania.

The project aims to sustainably produce 300,000 tonnes per annum of renewable green methanol, to be used as an alternative fuel for hard to abate sectors such as shipping or aviation and is expected to create 500+ jobs during construction and 300+ ongoing jobs during operational phase. Commercial operation is scheduled for 2028.

In 2023 ABEL Energy acquired the former Bell Bay Power Station from Hydro Tasmania and demolition works have commenced on site, with an estimated 70% of existing infrastructure to be recycled.

Engineering firm Worley has been engaged to complete Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) for the project, with global technology partners Johnson Matthey, SunGas Renewables and Thyssenkrupp engaged to support project design and technology.

The Bell Bay Powerfuels project will compliment and expand the renewable resources of Tasmania, including world-leading low-emissions renewable power and harvest residues from certified forestry plantations, to produce net-zero methanol.
