Redevelopment of Golconda Road

Golconda Road is an important transportation link for commuters, tourism, and freight between Dorset and the regional city of Launceston and further to the North West and South, as well as George Town Council, with the road a significant freight link to the port and industrial area of Bell Bay. Both the City of Launceston and George Town Council have supplied Letters of Support to the Golconda Road Upgrade project.

Golconda Road has documented accident clusters along its 40km length with extensive wear surface and pavement failure plus several road segments of poor alignment. As a key part of the regional transportation network, this has compounding effects across economic, social and health outcomes. Golconda Road is listed in both Council Road Strategy 2022-2027 (Action item 1.2) and Priority Projects Plan 2023-2025. Councils road strategy for the network identifies key freight and tourist links both within the municipality and adjoining municipalities and progressively improves the safety and productivity of these routes while maintaining the condition and safety of the remaining network. Golconda Road is listed in the Dorset Council Priority Projects Plan for 2 stages (Burns to Gillespies Road (6.9km - $3.2M) and Little Forester to North Blumont Road (3.4km - $3.2M). This project is a holistic treatment of the road as a whole and will build upon works completed to date.

Support requested

Sections of Golconda Road have undergone various upgrades and improvement treatments over recent years however the road needs a holistic total road length approach to ensure consistency in road geometry, and transport efficiencies and maximise industry, resident, and visitor benefits across the region. Support required includes funding for a Traffic Analysis and Road Safety Assessment followed by funding to complete identified treatments and upgrades.
